    8th Kyu Yellow Belt

For the first grade students don’t have to remember everything perfectly, they should simply have an idea about these techniques and be able to run through them in a class format, for the grading they can have someone in front of them going through the techniques as well, but only for visual assistance, no other help can be given.

    Kihon:

Chudan Tsuki – stomach level punch
Jodan Tsuki – Head level punch
    Ura Ken – back fist
Yoko Ura Ken – Side Back fist (to the side)
    Age Uke – Rising block
Uchi Uke – inside hooking block
Soto Uke – outside hooking block
Gedan Barai – Low level block
    Mae Geri – Front kick
    Ushiro Geri- Back kick
    Heiko Dachi – Ready stance
Zenkutsu Dachi – long forward stance
    Kamae – Fighting Stance

    Combinations:

-stepping through in zenkutsu dachi punching oi tsuki (lunge punch)
-Stepping through in zenkutsu dachi with any of the basic blocks.
-sanbon tsuki - stepping through in zenkutsu dachi performing jodan oi tsuki, then on the spot two chudan tsuki.
-stepping through in long forward stance blocking with one of the basic blocks and following up with two stomach level punches.
-mae geri with the back leg landing performing a gedan barai.

    Kumite:

    -Kihon Ippon Kumite set 1
Jodan – Right leg step back into Zenkutsu Dachi blocking with the left arm Age Uke, right arm counter punch Tsuki.
Chudan – Right leg step back into Zenkutsu Dachi blocking with the left arm Soto Uke, Right arm counter punch Gyaku Tsuki.
Mae Geri – Right leg steps to the right hand side in Zenkutsu Dachi blocking with the left arm Gedan Barai, Right arm counter punch Gyaku Tsuki.

    7th Kyu Orange Belt

Student should be able to perform the basics competently without anyone out in front of you. Kumite (sparring) may be introduced but this is nothing to worry about, you will not yet be graded on your kumite until your next belt.

    Kihon:

    Age Empi – Rising elbow
    Maswashi Empi – Round elbow
Uchi Shuto – Inside knife hand
    Ude Barai –Sweeping block
    Shuto Uke – Knifehand block
Yoko Geri – Side kick (to the side)
    Mawashi Geri – Round kick
Kokutsu Dachi – Back Leaning stance
    Kiba dachi – Side stance
    Shiko Dachi – Square stance

    Combinations:

    -Gyaku Tsuki in zenkutsu dachi.
-Any of the basic blocks followed with a gyaku tsuki.
-Stepping through in Kokutsu dachi performing Shuto Uke.
-In Zenkutsu dachi, step through Age Empi, Mawashi empi, then chudan kizami tsuki, then go back to guard.
-From Fighting stance, mae geri land performing age uke, then chudan gyaku tsuki reset back to guard.

    6th Kyu Green Belt

This grade I consider to be the start of the intermediate kyu grades. Student should be feeling more confident performing kihon in line, if you aren’t already you should definitely be trying to practise outside of the dojo as well to help with progress, we would expect you to be feeling a little more comfortable when it comes to kumite now, so your next grading we will grade you on your Kumite as well.

    Kihon:

    Soto Shuto – Outside knifehand
    Yoko Empi – Side elbow
Yoko Ura Ken – Side back fist (to the front)
    Nukite – Spear hand
    Kosa Uke – Double block
Yoko Geri – Side kick (to the front)

    Combinations:

-3 elbow combo - stepping through in zenkutsu dachi, age empi with the lead hand, mawashi empi with the other arm on the stop, then shifting inside kiba dachi with yoko empi
-From Kokutsu dachi, step the front foot across into zenkutsu dachi and perform nukite, then step through into kokutsu daich with shuto uke.
-from kiba dachi side on, stepping the back leg up and performing yoko geri with the lead leg landing back in kiba dachi, then perform another yoko geri with the back leg landing forward in kiba dachi.

    Kumite:

    Kihon Ippon Kumite Set 2
Jodan tsuki - left leg steps diagonally into kokutsu dachi with a high shuto uke, grab the hand, perform mae geri with the front leg follow up jodan tsuki to the head.
Chudan tsuki - Left leg takes a big step back into zenkutsu dachi, blocking with uchi uke using the right hand, grab the arm stepping the left leg behind their leg into kiba dachi performing yoko empi.
Mae geri - right leg steps straight back into kiba dachi with the left arm Ude Barai, the with the same arm yoko uraken uchi to the face.
